External Thrombotic Hemorrhoids

An external thrombotic hemorrhoid is a common ailment marked by acute pain and the appearance of a dark purplish lump outside the anal opening which can vary in size from a small pea to that of a golf ball. The lump is caused by the breaking of a small vein displacing blood clots beneath the skin. The extreme pain is due to pressure upon the superficial nerve endings. Thrombotic hemorrhoids are caused by the presence of internal hemorrhoids which narrow the circumference of the rectal canal and increase pressure within it. Treatment of external hemorrhoids is directed at reducing the pressure from the blood clots to relieve pain and reduce the possibility of skin tag formation.
